Supervising lawyers

Through our program, law students have the opportunity to develop their legal skills by providing free legal services to individuals and communities in need.  PBSC volunteer workers have areal passion for work related to the public interest and they commit toincrease access to justicein the local community.

Our motives

Our student volunteers follow training sessions on professionalism and ethics, in addition to receiving specialized sessions for certain projects.

They volunteer 3-5 hours per week for five months, or 60-100 hours in total.

The projects take place during the following months: October, November, January, February and March.

What our student volunteers do...

We are looking for passionate lawyers who would like to take part in the Pro Bono initiative. The role is toguide students in relation to the projects designed. By participating in the program, you contribute to the well-being and development of your community, but also to the learning of law students.

No training is required to participate.

All our lawyers are invited to activities, such as the launch party, the community activity, the evening of thanks and much more!

Given the condensed schedule, it is critical that supervising lawyers provide feedback to students quickly so that students have time to make revisions and complete projects within the brief five-month period. .

* The Law Society of New Brunswick has indicated that lawyers can claim credit under the "teaching" category for time spent preparing for a training or information session in the their work with PBSC (whether the training is for student volunteers or the public).

According to the Law Society of New Brunswick guidelines:

“The lawyer who teaches a qualifying course may obtain one credit per hour of teaching. The lawyer may request additional credits for teaching if the course is primarily intended for an audience of lawyers, articling students or law students, if the lawyer has developed the content of the course and if the participants have the possibility to ask questions. The lawyer may obtain a single credit for each hour of teaching if the course is aimed at the general public, if the lawyer teaches the same subject twice during the year which is the subject of the declaration or he chairs the program. »
